Genesis 1:1-10

12/04/2020

May Adonai bless us as we study his book (the Bible). We begin at the beginning and will endeavor to go all the way through. We will look at about ten verses at a time.

My name is Leonard, but my wife likes my biblical name, my middle name, Daniel, better. Her name is Tryfina, and we put a recent photo above, with some of my calligraphy, or fancy writing. You can call me Mr. L.

Here is a little picture to go with our text for this week's study:

EARTH

Genesis 1:1-10, from the World English Bible (a free modern English translation):

(1) In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
(2) The earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep and God's Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.
(3) God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
(4) God saw the light, and saw that it was good. God divided the light from the darkness.
(5) God called the light "day", and the darkness he called "night". There was evening and there was morning, the first day.
(6) God said, "Let there be an expanse in the middle of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters."
(7) God made the expanse, and divided the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so.
(8) God called the expanse "sky". There was evening and there was morning, a second day.
(9) God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear;" and it was so.
(10) God called the dry land "earth", and the gathering together of the waters he called "seas". God saw that it was good.

OK. Now let's look at this again, verse by verse:

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

The Bible does not have to prove to us that God is out there somewhere. We can see that there is a design to us and what surrounds us. Here is a quote from the Renewed Covenant writings, known also as the New Testament, about Yeshua, penned specifically by Sha'ul of Tarsus, known also as the Apostle Paul:

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known of God is revealed in them, for God

DAY ONE

The earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep and God's Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.

GOD'S SPIRIT HOVERING OVER THE WATERS

So, from verse two of Genesis chapter one, we know that the earth was nothing but water back then, as I understand it, or, at least, very deep water.

Now for verse three.

(3) God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.

So suddenly there was light.

God saw the light, and saw that it was good.

Let's put a check mark in the picture on the light, showing it is good.

Now there was light and darkness.

God divided the light from the darkness.

So, one side of earth had light and the other darkness.

(5) God called the light "day", and the darkness he called "night". There was evening and there was morning, the first day.

There you have it. The first day, in 24 hours. I believe that literally. A big God could do that in one day.
